【原文】

孙子曰:凡用兵之法,全国为上,破国次之,全军为上,破军次之;全旅为上,破旅次之;全卒为上,破卒次之;全伍为上,破伍次之。是故百战百胜,非善之善者也;不战而屈人之兵,善之善者也。

故上兵伐谋,其次伐交,其次伐兵,其下攻城。攻城之法为不得已。修橹轒辒,具器械,三月而后成,距又三月而后已。将不胜其忿而蚁附之,杀士三分之一而城不拔者,此攻之灾也。

故善用兵者,屈人之兵而非战也,拔人之城而非攻也,毁人之国而非久也,必以全争于天下。故兵不顿而利可全,此谋攻之法也。

故用兵之法,十则围之,五则攻之,倍则分之,敌则能战之,少则能逃之,不若则能避之。故小敌之坚,大敌之擒也。

夫将者,国之辅也。辅周,则国必强;辅隙,则国必弱。

故君之所以患于军者三:不知军之不可以进而谓之进,不知军之不可以退而谓之退,是谓”縻军”;不知三军之事,而同三军之政者,则军士惑矣;不知三军之权,而同三军之任,则军士疑矣。三军既惑且疑,则诸侯之难至矣,是谓”乱军引胜”。

故知胜有五:知可以战与不可以战者胜,识众寡之用者胜,上下同欲者胜,以虞待不虞者胜,将能而君不御者胜。此五者,知胜之道也。

故曰:知彼知己者,百战不殆;不知彼而知己,一胜一负,不知彼,不知己,每战必殆。

【注释】

(1)全国为上,破国次之:完整地使敌国降服是上策,经过交战击破敌国就次一等。全国,指使敌国完整地降服;破国,这里指攻破敌国。曹操注:“兴师深入长驱,距其城郭,绝其内外,敌举国来服为上;以兵击破,败而得之,其次也。”

(2)军、旅、卒、伍:古代军队的编制单位。旧说二千五百人为军;五百人为旅,一百人为卒,五人为伍。春秋以后,各诸侯国发展情况不同,军队编制不完全一样。

(3)上兵伐谋:最好的用兵方法是以谋伐敌,即以计谋使敌屈服。伐,讨伐、攻打。伐谋,用谋略战胜敌人。

(4)伐交:交,这里指外交。伐交,指通过外交途径,分化瓦解敌人的盟国,扩大、巩固自己的盟国,迫使敌人陷于孤立,最后不得不降服。

(5)修橹轒(fén)辒(wēn):修,修整、建造。橹,一种用藤草制成的大盾牌。轒輼(fén wēn),古代攻城用的四轮车,用排木制作,外蒙牛皮,可容纳十人,用以运土填塞城壕。

(6)具器械:准备攻城用的器械。具,准备。

(7)距堙(yīn):用以攻城而堆积的土山,以便登城或观察情况。

(8)蚁附之:指士兵像蚂蚁一般爬梯攻城。

(9)屈人之兵:降服敌人的军队。非战:指运用“伐谋”“伐交”等办法迫使敌人降服,而不用交战的办法。

(10)拔人之城而非攻也:指夺取敌人的城堡不靠硬攻的办法。

(11)毁人之国:汉简《孙子兵法》作“破人之国”。

(12)顿:通“钝”,这里指疲惫、受挫的意思。

(13)十则围之:有十倍于敌人的绝对优势的兵力,就要四面包围,迫敌降服。

(14)五则攻之:有五倍于敌的优势兵力,就要进攻它。

(15)倍则分之:有一倍于敌人的兵力,就设法分散敌人,以便在局部上造成更大的兵力优势。

(16)敌则能战之:同敌人兵力相等,就要善于设法战胜敌人,如设伏诱敌等。敌,这里指势均力敌。

(17)少则能逃之:兵力比敌人少,就要能摆脱敌人。逃,脱离、摆脱。

(18)不若则能避之:各种条件均不如敌人时,就要设法避免与敌交战。

(19)小敌之坚,大敌之擒:力量弱小的军队,如只知坚守硬拼,就会成为强大敌人的俘虏。

(20)国:指国君。辅:辅佐、辅助。这里引申为助手。

(21)周:周到、周全。

(22)隙:漏洞、缺陷。

(23)君之所以患于军者三:此句有的版本作“军之所以患于君者三”。患,危害、贻害。

(24)縻军:束缚军队,使军队不能根据情况相机而动。縻(mí),羁縻、束缚。

(25)三军:军队的通称。周代,大的诸侯国设三军,有的为左、中、右三军,有的为上、中、下三军。

(26)同:共同,这里是参与、干涉的意思。

(27)乱军引胜:扰乱自己的军队,而导致敌人的胜利。引,引导、导致。

(28)知胜:预知胜利。

(29)识众寡之用:善于根据敌对双方兵力对比的众寡情况,正确采用不同战法。识,汉简《孙子兵法》作“知”。

(30)知彼知己,百战不殆:殆,危险。知彼知己,指了解敌人各方面情况,也了解自己的长处和弱点,了解了敌情也了解了本军情况,有把握才打,没有把握就不打。所说百战不殆,即每次作战都没有危险。

【翻译/译文】

孙子说:大凡用兵的原则,使敌举国不战而降是上策,击破敌国使之降服是次一等用兵策略;使敌全军不战而降是上策,击破而取胜是次一等用兵策略;使敌全旅不战而降是上策,击破敌旅而取胜是次一等用兵策略;使敌全卒不战而降是上策,击破敌卒使之降服是次一等策略;使敌全伍不战而降是上策,击破敌伍而取胜是次一等策略。因此,百战百胜,并非好的用兵策略中最好的,不交战而使敌屈服,才是用兵策略中最好的。

所以上等的用兵策略是以谋略胜敌,其次是以外交手段胜敌,再其次是出动军队交兵胜敌,最下等的是攻城。攻城是在不得已的情况下才采取的策略。为了攻城,修造蔽橹、轒辒,准备各种攻城器械,需要花费三个月时间;堆积攻城的土山,又需要三个月的时间。这时,将帅们已经非常焦躁忿怒,驱赶着士兵像蚂蚁一样去爬梯攻城,士卒伤亡三分之一而城还不能攻下,这便是攻城带来的灾害啊!

因此,善于用兵的人,使敌军屈服而不用野战交兵的办法,夺取敌城不用蚁附攻城的办法,消灭敌国而不采用长久用兵的办法。一定本着不诉诸兵刃就使敌完整地屈服的原则争横天下,做到军队不受挫而胜利可全得,这便是谋攻的原则。

根据用兵规律,有十倍于敌人的兵力就包围歼灭敌人,有五倍于敌人的兵力就猛烈进攻敌人,有多一倍于敌人的兵力就分割消灭敌人,有与敌相当的兵力则可以抗击,比敌人兵力少时就摆脱敌人,不如敌人兵力强大就避免与敌争锋。小股兵力如果顽固硬拼,就会被强大的对方俘获。

将帅,是国君的辅佐。辅佐得周密,国家就强盛;辅佐有疏漏,国家必然衰弱。

君主对军队造成危害的情况有三个方面:不懂得军队不可以前进而命令他们前进,不懂得军队不可以后退而命令他们后退,这叫束缚、羁縻军队;不懂军中事务却干涉军中行政管理,那么,军士就会迷惑;不知军中权谋之变而参与军队指挥,那么将士就会疑虑。如果三军将士既迷惑又疑虑,诸侯乘机起而攻之的灾难就到来了。这就叫自乱其军而丧失了胜利。

预测胜负有五条:懂得什么条件下可以战,什么条件下不可以战的,胜;懂得众与寡的灵活运用的,胜;上下一心,同仇敌忾的,胜 以有准备之师击无准备之敌的,胜 将领富于才能而君主又不从中干预牵制的,胜。这五条就是预知胜负的途径。

因此,可以说:了解对方也了解自己的,百战不败;不了解对方而了解自己的,胜负各半;不了解对方,也不了解自己的,每战必败。

III. Attack by Stratagem

孙子曰:夫用兵之法,全国为上,破国次之;全军为上,破军次之;全旅为上,破旅次之;全卒

为上,破卒次之;全伍为上,破伍次之。

Sun Tzu said: In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy’s country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it, to capture a regiment, a detachment or a company entire than to destroy them.

是故百战百胜,非善之善也;不战而屈人之兵,善之善者也。

Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting.

故上兵伐谋,其次伐交,其次伐兵,其下攻城。

Thus the highest form of generalship is to balk the enemy’s plans; the next best is to prevent the junction of the enemy’s forces; the next in order is to attack the enemy’s army in the field; and the worst policy of all is to besiege walled cities.

攻城之法,为不得已。修橹□①□②,具器械,三月而后成;距堙,又三月而后已。

The rule is, not to besiege walled cities if it can possibly be avoided. The preparation of mantlets, movable shelters, and various implements of war, will take up three whole months; and the piling up of mounds over against the walls will take three months more.

将不胜其忿而蚁附之,杀士卒三分之一,而城不拔者,此攻之灾也。

The general, unable to control his irritation, will launch his men to the assault like swarming ants, with the result that one-third of his men are slain, while the town still remains untaken. Such are the disastrous effects of a siege.

故善用兵者,屈人之兵而非战也,拔人之城而非攻也,毁人之国而非久也,

Therefore the skillful leader subdues the enemy’s troops without any fighting; he captures their cities without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom without lengthy operations in the field.

必以全争于天下,故兵不顿而利可全,此谋攻之法也。

With his forces intact he will dispute the mastery of the Empire, and thus, without losing a man, his triumph will be complete. This is the method of attacking by stratagem.

故用兵之法,十则围之,五则攻之,倍则分之,

It is the rule in war, if our forces are ten to the enemy’s one, to surround him; if five to one, to attack him; if twice as numerous, to divide our army into two.

敌则能战之,少则能逃之,不若则能避之。

If equally matched, we can offer battle; if slightly inferior in numbers, we can avoid the enemy; if quite unequal in every way, we can flee from him.

故小敌之坚,大敌之擒也。

Hence, though an obstinate fight may be made by a small force, in the end it must be captured by the larger force.

夫将者,国之辅也。辅周则国必强,辅隙则国必弱。

Now the general is the bulwark of the State; if the bulwark is complete at all points; the State will be strong; if the bulwark is defective, the State will be weak.

故君之所以患于军者三:

There are three ways in which a ruler can bring misfortune upon his army:–

(1) 不知军之不可以进而谓之进,不知军之不可以退而谓之退,是谓縻军;

(1) By commanding the army to advance or to retreat, being ignorant of the fact that it cannot obey. This is called hobbling the army.

(2) 不知三军之事而同三军之政,则军士惑矣;

(2) By attempting to govern an army in the same way as he administers a kingdom, being ignorant of the conditions which obtain in an army. This causes restlessness in the soldier’s minds.

(3)不知三军之权而同三军之任,则军士疑矣。

(3) By employing the officers of his army without discrimination, through ignorance of the military principle of adaptation to circumstances. This shakes the confidence of the soldiers.

三军既惑且疑,则诸侯之难至矣。是谓乱军引胜。

But when the army is restless and distrustful, trouble is sure to come from the other feudal princes. This is simply bringing anarchy into the army, and flinging victory away.

故知胜有五:知可以战与不可以战者胜,识众寡之用者胜,上下同欲者胜,以虞待不虞者胜,将能而君不御者胜。此五者,知胜之道也。

Thus we may know that there are five essentials for victory: (1) He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight. (2) He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces. (3) He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks. (4) He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared. (5) He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.

故曰:知己知彼,百战不贻;不知彼而知己,一胜一负;不知彼不知己,每战必败。

Hence the saying: If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.
